JULLIE HJETLAND (DK/NO)

Dive deeper into the repetition of the waves and embrace the cycles of the sea.

Welcome the ancient Gatherer of Repetition when she gradely wanders on the shore bringing with her the sacred treasure of the vast dark sea to the abandoned Old Fishing House at Odden Harbour.

Inspired by the pioneering American composer Steve Reich's use of repetition like the sea the award-winning singer and electronic musician Jullie Hjetland will perform Konkyllie – a sound piece specially composed by her for one of the artists Anna Bak’s sculptures as part of the installation Fatal Waves.

In Konkyllie she attaches her electronic chords and vocals with other worldly marine instruments –  particularly the conch shell. Jullie Hjetland creates a beautifully dark live experience that renounces our one-time affiliation and fear to the sea, by taking a conch up to the ear to hear the sea, but you hear nothing - only your solitary self.

For Jullie Hjetland the conch contains so much mystery, the circle inside and beautiful shape and the ancient sound of something far away and yet so close. She grew up by the sea and has always been attracted to its cycles, the repetitions and slowness of change which stands in opposition to the daily busy life, constantly reinventing ourselves, where linear time has become dominant.

Jullie Hjetland is a Norwegian/Danish singer, electronic musician, composer, performer, and teacher, with roots in the Nordic folk music scene. Apart from her solo act Lukkif, she appears as a band leader, composer, and performer in many theater settings, making music for films, podcasts, and tv-show. She was nominated to a Reumert, and among several Danish Music Awards nominations, she has received two for best vocal.
