A giant has settled on Lost Farm, being both a fearsome monster and a protector.
On an open field out of town, visual artists Sahar Jamili and Mikka Gro Nielsen have, together with Ukraine art students, specially created the monumental Safe House monster for Lost Farm Festival. Taking inspiration from the local ancient legend of the giant who created Sjællands Odde the artists made a monster covered in a black cloak of hoodies, to offer shelter for Lostfarmers as well as a space of resistance, protection, and security in a world of ongoing wars and conflicts.
A few kilometers away from Sjællands Odde lies a naval base, where canons and warships practice their ammunitions out at sea, making the ground shake while their noise echoes across the water, creating a stark contrast to the romanticized, peaceful landscape of the area. This modern-day reminder of Denmark’s defense and involvement in global conflicts amplifies the themes of protection and destruction within the artwork.
In this remote and beautiful setting, Sahar Jamili & Mikka Gro Nielsen's giant becomes not just a Safe House from the destructive elements, but a metaphor for resilience and the need for safer spaces in a world fraught with conflict. It invites visitors to step inside and reflect on the delicate balance between beauty, safety, and the realities of defense and war – the need for shelter shapes our relationship to the land, the people, and the stories that define us.
Sahar Jamili is educated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2024. They works with playfulness and the need to embrace the experience of joy – an act of defiance against societal expectations. Through this, they exposes inequalities, amplifies marginalized voices, and highlights the struggles and complexities of identity. They create scenographic installations where materials and artistic media congregate, drawing inspiration from underground subcultures and daily life. Sahar Jamili is currently exhibiting don't hate the player – hate the game at art space inter.pblc.
Mikka Gro Nielsen is a Copenhagen-based artist, educated at the Universität der Künste Berlin. From 2015 to 2021, she was a key figure in the Berlin techno underground, co-founding Herrensauna. Recently, her focus has shifted to nature and plant species development. She participated in a research project exploring plant life under varying environmental conditions, which has influenced her artistic practice. Her work explores the supernatural, reflecting her interest in the intersection of art, design, nature, and humanity's physical and metaphysical role on earth.
The installation is made in collaboration with art students from Mykhailo Boychuk Kyiv State Academy Of Decorative And Applied Arts And Design in Kyiv, Ukraine attending Lost Farm Festival Ukrainian-Danish Art & Culture Exchange Program.
Sahar Jamili & Mikka Gro Nielsen at Lost Farm Festival is supported by the New Carlsberg Foundation.
